Swansea University Research Excellence Scholarships (SURES) in Psychology – 2023
Effective communication is crucial for lowering the global disease burden. This study will explore the idea of “alert fatigue,” a mental state brought on by receiving an excessive number of “alerts” (messages), which might cause confusion or “information overload.”The initiative is based on recently completed research on alert fatigue conducted by supervisors during the coronavirus pandemic, which has helped shape government policy in the UK (Williams et al., 2021). The supervisors released a scoping review on communication during the pandemic with the Royal Society (Williams et al., in press) because communication is a key concern for the COVID-19 inquiry as well. However, little is known about the nature of alert weariness and what exactly causes it, and this knowledge is crucial for global public health messages in the future. An experimental investigation will follow the project’s examination of current qualitative interviews and systematic evaluation of the body of literature on alert fatigue. This experimental study will investigate if people’s capacity to remember, comprehend, and act on public health advice is influenced by the quantity, length, and complexity of the information they hear.
Guidelines and guidelines for effective communication for public health policy and practise will be informed by the findings. The chosen applicant will have the chance to collaborate with a global group of specialists in the area who are closely connected to the public sector.
