The only drawback of this process is that you won’t be able to use TSA PreCheck until after you’ve finished enrolling, so your international travel is out of luck. However, if organizing an interview becomes difficult, it is a straightforward approach to go about it.
Renewals Provide More Options
Are you adding an extra five years to the validity of your Global Entry? This is a very different story.
One year before your Global Entry is set to expire, you can start the renewal procedure. The initial Global Entry application process can be compared to the renewal application process. Barring any significant changes in circumstances, conditional approval should be simpler (and considerably quicker).
When renewing Global Entry, there are a few nuances to be aware of, and that’s a good thing.
- An earlier remark made to Thrifty Traveler by a Global Entry representative suggested that a “substantial percentage of Trusted Traveler Program member renewals” might be accepted automatically, obviating the need for an interview.
- Global Entry now offers Zoom interviews remotely to many members who are renewing if an interview is necessary. These sessions can be scheduled far more easily than in-person interviews, and you can do it from your home.
- Members of Global Entry now receive a two-year grace period, even if the renewal process has stopped. You have two more years beyond the initial expiration date to use TSA PreCheck and Global Entry while your renewal is still processing.
