Swansea City AFC and EPSRC PhD in Biomedical Engineering (Fully funded) – 2023/24

This PhD study determines whether team performance indicators (PIs) can accurately forecast game results in professional football played in the EFL Championship.

The candidate will examine current team performance indicators and use these to retroactively establish the efficacy of match prediction using historical data from our project partner, Swansea City FC.

The candidate will look into whether the existing or newly discovered PI’s can be diminished so that they are more manageable for practitioners at the level of the individual player and give a scientific foundation for future adjustments to team composition, playing formation, and strategy. Additionally, this internship will aid in redefining post-game recovery for players as a function of the style of play, which was previously ignored, by assisting football practitioners in comprehending the physical effects of playing patterns and the ‘effort-level’ imposed on individual players.

The applicant will be integrated into a professional football setting and be required to abide by stringent non-interference guidelines. They will be in charge of gathering multi-channel data from various microtechnology tools that evaluate performance and track the amount of training required, and they will ultimately be in charge of a standardized database’s data quality, provenance, and curation.
