[Anglican Communion 10 May 2020] Topic: Do Not Be Deceived

Daily Fountain Devotional

TOPIC: Do Not Be Deceived

Read: 1 Corinthians 4:14, 5:5 (NKJV)

4:14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn [you.]

5:5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

THE MESSAGE:

The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines ‘mentor’ as a wise and trusted adviser/master and helper of an inexperienced person. A disciple, on the other hand, is an inexperienced person understudying a wise and trusted adviser in a particular area of life. A mentor is expected to reproduce himself in his followers (Luke 6:40); see also John 13:15 where Christ says “I have given you an example that you should do as I have done….” In our text, Paul is worried that some of his “children”, followers, disciples, in the Corinthian Church were not following his footsteps (verse 16). There are false teachers who are reproducing their kind or destroying those brought up in the proper way. See 1John 4:1 and Ephesians 5:1.

In I John 4:1 we are advised to test every spirit before identifying with any, as our leader, teacher or pastor. How do we test them? See Matthew 7:15-18; 1John 2:15-19. We are warned to avoid leaders, pastors or brothers and sisters who are worldly or carnal and do not imitate Christ. A leader to follow must walk close to God. His life must be an example: Not a fornicator or adulterer; not materialistic but sober-minded and careful about life.

PRAYER: Father, please help me to live my life in a way that will be worthy of You.
