Entries Now Open – Australian Institute of Architects (Victorian Chapter)
The Robert Caulfield Graduate Research Scholarship is an annual award presented by the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. It recognises and supports outstanding architectural research that strengthens the profession’s contribution to society.
This prestigious scholarship is awarded to the most compelling proposal that critically investigates a relevant architectural issue. Cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are highly encouraged, highlighting the evolving role of architecture in addressing industry and community needs.
Research must be completed within 12 months of the award being granted.
The program aims to:
Advance architecture through research and innovative thinking
Demonstrate the profession’s value to industry and the wider community
Build stronger connections between academia and professional practice
Encourage future-focused, critical approaches to architecture
Support the development of early- and mid-career architects
The scholarship winner will be announced at the Victorian Chapter End-of-Year Gala (November 2025, date TBC), alongside other awards such as the Graduate Prize and Student Ideas Prize.
The completed research project will be:
Promoted via Institute publications, newsletters, and social media
Featured on the official Australian Institute of Architects website
Shared with industry stakeholders to maximise impact
This scholarship is generously funded by Robert Caulfield LFRAIA, whose international career was launched after receiving two Institute research scholarships early in his journey—the KA Henderson Scholarship and the Sisalation Scholarship.
Robert believes strongly in the power of scholarships to shape the careers of emerging architects. The fund is managed by the Foundation of the Australian Institute of Architects, a registered charity dedicated to initiatives that celebrate and promote Australian architecture.
Applicants must:
Reside in Victoria and be a member of the Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN)
Have graduated within the past 15 years from an AACA-accredited Master of Architecture program (or equivalent), OR have been first registered as an architect in Australia within the past 10 years
Apply individually or as part of a team (maximum two participants), with all applicants meeting the above criteria
The 2025 recipient will receive:
$10,000 research funding
Certificate of achievement
One year of Institute membership (redeemable within two years)
Two complimentary tickets to the Victorian Chapter End-of-Year Gala
In addition, recipients will be connected with industry professionals to present and share their research.
Applicants must submit the following:
Title of research
Synopsis (max. 500 words) explaining purpose and intent
Proposed format of final deliverable(s)
Applicant name(s) and contact details
1–2 minute recorded presentation summarising the research idea
Institute membership number
Graduation and/or registration details
Recipients must:
Complete the project in a publication-ready format
Present key findings at an Institute forum within 12 months
Deliver a 30–60 minute formal presentation of outcomes
Allow the Institute to promote the research with full recognition of authorship
Proposals will be reviewed by an independent panel of academics, practitioners, and industry representatives. Assessment will be based on:
Clarity of methodology and objectives
Innovation and practical application
Relevance to current and future architectural challenges
Contribution to interdisciplinary practice
Potential for industry and community impact
Panel Composition:
Victorian Chapter Representative (Chair, with casting vote)
National Council Representative (academic)
Victorian Chapter Practice of Architecture Committee representative
Donor representative (industry/community)
The panel’s decision is final; feedback will not be provided.
