Established in 2013 by Miles Morland, a prominent investor in African markets, the Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) is a UK-registered charity based in London. The Foundation is deeply committed to supporting African voices, especially through literature and writing. Its core mission is to enable African writers to tell their stories and contribute meaningfully to the global literary landscape.
This opportunity is open to African writers of fiction and non-fiction who meet the following criteria:
Applicants must submit an excerpt of 2,000 to 5,000 words, written in English, from a previously published work that has been offered for sale.
Proof of both publication and sale is required.
Submissions will be judged solely on literary merit.
Academic, scientific, religious, or political works do not qualify.
To apply, you must submit:
A Word document (2,000 – 5,000 words) of your previously published work.
Proof of publication and commercial sale of the submitted work.
A proposal (400 – 1,000 words) outlining the book you intend to write.
A scanned document proving that you, or both of your parents, were born in Africa.
A short bio (200 – 300 words).
A statement on how you learned about the Morland Writing Scholarships.
Citizens of any African country are welcome to apply.
While the scholarship is awarded by a UK-based foundation, recipients can write from anywhere, provided they commit to the Foundation’s terms.
Scholars will receive a grant of £18,000, disbursed in monthly payments over 12 months.
Non-fiction writers requiring extra time for research may receive extended funding for up to 18 months, at the Foundation’s discretion.
