Fully Funded Research Fellowships for International Scholars
The DAAD Alfried Krupp Fellowships 2026–2027 offer an exceptional opportunity for international scholars to pursue independent, interdisciplinary research in Germany. Hosted by the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald and supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), these prestigious fellowships provide a fully funded academic stay in the picturesque university town of Greifswald, near the Baltic Sea.
This program invites both established and emerging scholars to engage in meaningful research free from teaching or administrative obligations, with access to a vibrant academic community and world-class facilities.
For the 2026–2027 academic year, the Kolleg will award:
6 Senior Fellowships – for internationally recognized scholars with established research records
8 Junior Fellowships – for early-career postdoctoral researchers with demonstrated academic potential
“Research on the Baltic Sea Region – From Culture to Ecology”
While this theme will be emphasized, applications from all disciplines are welcome. The selection committee prioritizes academic excellence and relevance to the research profile of Greifswald University.
All fellows will receive:
Fully funded residency tailored to their academic rank
Private furnished accommodation in Greifswald
Well-equipped personal office space at the Wissenschaftskolleg
Full access to Greifswald University’s research networks and resources
Family-friendly environment – spouses and children are welcome to accompany fellows
🚫 Note: Travel costs, insurance, and laboratory or fieldwork expenses are not covered by the program.
Senior Fellows are encouraged to align the fellowship with a sabbatical or research semester at their home institution. Co-funding is optional but appreciated.
Junior Fellows should seek formal leave from their institutions and disclose any partial funding in their application.
Fellows may choose from two possible terms:
6 months:
October 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027
April 1, 2027 – September 30, 2027
12 months:
October 1, 2026 – September 30, 2027
Hold a strong international academic reputation
Have a substantial record of research and university-level teaching
Hold a completed PhD
Demonstrate a clear trajectory of research excellence and innovation

Q1: Who is eligible to apply?
A: The program is open to senior and junior researchers from any country and any academic field.
Q2: What does the fellowship cover?
A: Accommodation, office space, research resources, and institutional access. Travel, insurance, and lab costs are not included.
Q3: Can I bring my family?
A: Yes. The fellowship is family-friendly, and partners and children are welcome to join you in Greifswald.
Q4: Is my research required to focus on the Baltic Sea Region?
A: No. While the theme is encouraged, all high-quality proposals are welcome, regardless of topic.
Q5: Is co-funding required?
A: Not mandatory. However, senior fellows are encouraged to explore co-funding, and junior fellows should ideally secure leave from their home institution.
