The Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS), in collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), invites exceptional international candidates to apply for the 2026 fully funded PhD scholarships under the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP). These competitive awards support early-career researchers in fields related to ancient studies and cultural heritage.
Focus: Philology, digital humanities, linguistics
Eligible Disciplines:
Ancient History, Late Antiquity, Early Middle Ages
Classical Philology: Greek and Latin
Coptic, Ancient Oriental Languages
Egyptology, Iranian Studies, Jewish Studies
Indo-European Linguistics, Protestant Theology, Roman Law
Focus: Visual and material culture, archaeological interpretation
Eligible Disciplines:
Classical, Near Eastern, and Prehistoric Archaeology
Egyptology, Northeast African Archaeology
Ancient Oriental Studies
Focus: Built environments, geospatial and landscape analysis
Eligible Disciplines:
Classical, Near Eastern, and Prehistoric Archaeology
Landscape-oriented Egyptology
Monthly stipend: €1,300
Insurance: Health, accident, and personal liability coverage
Travel allowance
Annual research allowance: €1,000
Family and housing support (if applicable)
German language course (pre-sessional, fully funded)
International mobility allowance: Up to 25% of program duration
Applicants must:
Be non-German nationals
Hold a master’s degree in a relevant field (or expect to complete it before enrollment) awarded after March 1, 2020
Not have resided continuously in Germany since before December 1, 2024
Not hold a doctoral degree
Demonstrate English proficiency (minimum B2, C1 if applying to Freie Universität Berlin)

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an online interview
Admission to a BerGSAS program is followed by final review and selection by DAAD

Q1: Can I apply if I haven’t received my master’s certificate yet?
Yes. You may apply if your thesis has been submitted and graded before the deadline. Final documentation must be submitted before enrollment.
Q2: Is knowledge of German required?
No, but participation in a pre-sessional German course is recommended and covered by the scholarship.
Q3: What constitutes a strong application?
A focused, feasible, and innovative research proposal that aligns with one of the tracks, a solid academic record, strong references, and language competence in English and relevant ancient languages.
