The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) is a prestigious two-year scholarship program jointly administered by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Japan. It is designed to build capacity among young African professionals by offering them the opportunity to pursue master’s degree programs in key development areas at select partner institutions in Japan and Africa.
This initiative aims to nurture future leaders equipped with the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to support sustainable development across the African continent.
JADS scholars receive a comprehensive support package, including:
Full tuition coverage for the entire duration of the master’s program (up to 24 months)
Monthly living allowance for day-to-day expenses
Round-trip airfare from the scholar’s home country to the host university at the beginning and end of the program
Health insurance, typically arranged through the host institution
Up to six additional months of funding for internships or preparatory studies after graduation
A research and thesis grant for students conducting academic research
Coverage of computer literacy, language training, or other preparatory courses, if deemed necessary
To qualify for the 2025 JADS Scholarship, applicants must meet the following conditions:
Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as:
Energy
Agriculture
Environmental sustainability
Engineering
Public health
Demonstrate outstanding academic performance and relevant professional experience
Have a proven commitment to contributing to their country’s development goals
Be 35 years of age or younger and in good health
Have at least one year of paid, post-graduate work experience in their home country (or another African country) within the last three years
Be admitted into a master’s degree program at one of the approved partner universities in Japan or Africa
Not be currently enrolled in another graduate program
Be a citizen of one of the African Development Bank’s Regional Member Countries (RMCs)
Must not be an employee, close relative, or alternate of any Executive Director or staff member of the African Development Bank Group
Note: A “close relative” includes Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew (by blood or adoption).

Contact your potential supervisor directly via email with the following details:
A brief self-introduction
Your research interest/topic
Intended enrollment period
Indicate clearly that you are applying for the JADS Scholarship
