Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for consideration for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, Canada 2024–25, all applicants must fulfill the requirements listed below:
- Available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents as well as foreign students pursuing a doctorate at reputable Canadian universities.
- Be enrolled in a combined undergraduate/graduate research program (including an MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD, provided it includes a documented and significant research component) to be pursuing your first doctorate; only one Canadian institution, which must have obtained a Vanier CGS quota, may submit a nomination.
- Remember that funding is only available for the PhD component of combined degrees; plan to pursue doctoral studies and research full-time at the institution where the nomination was made in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results; Keep in mind that funding is only available for the PhD portion of combined degrees;
- You must have completed no more than 20 months of PhD coursework by May 1, 2023, and you must have obtained a first-class average—or the equivalent—during the two preceding years of full-time study as determined by your school. In order to seek or finish a doctoral degree, candidates must presently hold or have ever held a PhD-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. Candidates are urged to contact the university to learn more about what a first-class average entails.
- For doctoral awards, only programs with a sizable research component are qualified. The research component is a substantial, autonomous study that yields a dissertation, significant scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit that has undergone institutional merit review. It must be a requirement for program completion. Programs that have a clinical concentration, like clinical psychology, are also eligible as long as they incorporate a significant amount of the aforementioned research.
- Academic achievement as demonstrated by transcripts, honors, awards, and past grades.
- The candidate’s history in the subject, interest in learning, ability to advance knowledge in the field, potential benefits to Canadians, and any projected outcomes all demonstrate their research potential.
