Malawian applicants will be eligible to apply for Manchester Equity & Merit scholarships from the University of Manchester for a number of master’s programmes.

The Manchester Equity & Merit Scholarships are as follows:
- Academically outstanding students from Sub-Saharan Africa who have the ability to significantly contribute to sustainable development in their native countries are given Equity and Merit Scholarships each year by The University of Manchester.
- The greatest young brains on the planet have the potential and motivation to make a difference in the various developmental issues that nations throughout the world confront. They are assisted in doing this through our equity and merit programme.
- From power engineering to global urban development, each postgraduate programme has been developed with the unique circumstances of these nations in mind and aims to solve the skills gaps that exist there. The scholarships enable young professionals from the Global South to progress themselves and larger society while addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- The University and its donors collaborate to fund the scholarships. The University fully covers students’ tuition costs, and the kindness of our benefactors covers the cost of living, travel to the UK, and visas.
- The recipients of the grants are individuals who wouldn’t be able to afford to attend school in Manchester without a scholarship. We adhere to an equal opportunity policy, and each application is evaluated on its own merits. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
We provide two categories of scholarships:
- Full-time, on-campus master’s degree programme.
- Master’s degree through part-time remote learning, lasting three to five years.
39 scholarships are available for a variety of programmes in engineering, the environment, health sciences, development, education, textiles, and law (29 for full-time study and ten for online study). Applicants from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe are eligible for the programme.

Our master’s scholarships are intended for bright candidates, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Applying for a scholarship entails:
- Be a resident of one of the following countries: Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zimbabwe, and not have previously studied abroad (six-month or shorter training does not count);
- Possess a bachelor’s degree (you must have earned it before September 2020) with an overall outstanding grade; and have at least two years of professional experience in your chosen field of study (this does not include unpaid internships or volunteer work).
- The prizes are given to students that excel academically, which usually means they rank in the top 10% of their class;
possess a strong sense of how attending Manchester University will advance both your career and the greater community. - Be committed to returning home and be able to show that you have the potential to positively influence the future of your home nation.
Number Of Awards:
There are 39 scholarships (29 for full-time study and ten for online study).
Value of Manchester Equity & Merit Award: For students who will be studying in Manchester, the award also includes return international airfares, living expenses, and visas. The scholarships cover the whole cost of tuition.
English Language Requirements:
- When you apply for the scholarship, you are not need to submit your IELTS or TOFEL exam results. However, you will be required to take an approved English exam if your name is shortlisted for an interview.
- The English exam scores needed for each master’s programmes on the scholarship list vary. For further information, please see the course profiles.
- To be considered for a scholarship, you would typically require a minimum TOEFL 90 or IELTS 6.5 (with no subtest result lower than 5.5).
- Applicants who have studied in English are not exempt from these language requirements, and your university’s certificate of English language proficiency is not recognised by us.

Important Information: Please take note that our admissions process and the process for awarding scholarships are clearly distinct from one another. Scholarships are given solely based on merit. To apply for the scholarship, you do not need to have received a formal admissions offer from a school. Having an academic offer has no advantages or disadvantages. If you are awarded the scholarship, you will be accepted without delay to the programme of your choosing.
