Topic: Nothing Is Worth Dying For

Read: Ecclesiastes 6:1-12 (NKJV)

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it [is] common among men:
A man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor, so that he lacks nothing for himself of all he desires; yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a foreigner consumes it. This [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil affliction.
If a man begets a hundred [children] and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no burial, I say [that] a stillborn child [is] better than he —
for it comes in vanity and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.
Though it has not seen the sun or known [anything,] this has more rest than that man,
even if he lives a thousand years twice — but has not seen goodness. Do not all go to one place?
All the labor of man [is] for his mouth, And yet the soul is not satisfied.
For what more has the wise [man] than the fool? What does the poor man have, Who knows [how] to walk before the living?
Better [is] the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire. This also [is] vanity and grasping for the wind.
Whatever one is, he has been named already, For it is known that he [is] man; And he cannot contend with Him who is mightier than he.
Since there are many things that increase vanity, How [is] man the better?
For who knows what [is] good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he passes like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will happen after him under the sun?
THE MESSAGE:

God has designed life in such a way that man must work before he can eat. Right from the beginning of man’s existence, God has not left him without something to do. In Genesis 2:15 the Bible says “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and to keep it.” In other words, man must work; he must engage his productive life to do something tangible. In our passage today, we are made to see the vanity of what man runs after every now and then (verses 1-2). What we see here is that man may work hard and have his efforts crowned with outstanding success but may not eat of it. It is vanity when a man’s hard work is enjoyed by a foreigner. This indeed is a reality that has played out very prominently many times.

Beloved, as Christians, we must undertake all our activities as God’s own children, in a discreet manner; nothing should rub us of our commitment to godliness. The riches of this world are not worth dying for; we must not lose our focus because of the riches of this world. We must never involve in any ungodly act in the name of becoming rich. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 says “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”Therefore, as you go on in your life pilgrimage, be careful that you do not venture into ungodliness as means of becoming rich. Be satisfied with whatever God gives you and it shall be well with you.

PRAYER: Dear Father in heaven, help me to keep my focus on You always. Amen.
