TOPIC: What Are You Using Your Skills And Gifts For?

READ: Acts 18:24-28 (NKJV)

Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man [and] mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus.
This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.
So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace;
for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
THE MESSAGE:

Today we are looking at the person of Apollos as portrayed to us in this passage. Apollos possesses the character of a man who would go far in God’s scheme of things. Obviously, he was a man set apart to accomplish a lot for the Lord through his life and ministry. There are a number of things to learn: First, Apollos was a man knowledgeable in Scriptures. If we wish to go far, we must not only define our relationship with God but also our relationship with God’s word. Remember, the written word of God is the number one way that God speaks to us. Therefore, we need to give it priority attention daily.

Secondly, despite his vast knowledge of God’s word, Apollos was still humble and willing to learn some more. He was teachable. He still humbled himself to learn under the ministry of Pricilla and Aquila (themselves partners with Paul). The common temptation for many of us is to arrive at a point where we feel too big to still learn; to feel we know it all and no one speaks into our lives any more. This arrogant attitude has caused the downfall of many from grace. No matter how high you get on the ladder, you must always be willing to stoop down to learn some more. Thirdly, Apollos put his knowledge and zeal to full use in the defence of the gospel. His skills and gifts were not for self-aggrandisement. What are you using your skills and gifts for? Are you using them for the Lord’s glory or for your own glory?

PRAYER: Lord help me to employ the resources of my life in advancing the gospel.
